Bodega Rosell Mir

The Rosell Mir family (www.rosellmir.com) has owned the Can Guineu farm in Sant Sadurni de Noya, 30km south of Barcelona, since the thirteenth century. The family started making wine and brandies in 1776 and sold it to others in bulk. In 1851 Marc Mir was born and he the most renowned member of the family from both an intellectual and social point of view. He became both mayor and member of parliament, he wrote about agricultural issues and was a driving force behind the replanting of the vineyard after they had been wiped out by phylloxera. He organised the first winecongress in Spain and hosted it at the Can Guineu Winery. It wasn’t until 1979 that the current owner Josep M. Rosell (the 18th generation!) started bottling wine of their own. The farm has 64 hectares of Xarel Lo, Macabeu, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha Blanca. The climate of Sant Sadurni, where the winery is located, is typically mediterranean, with hot and dry summers and mild winters. The vineyards are located between the Subirates Mountains and the Noya River and the soil is more loamy in the river area and more calcareous in the holls. Very old Xarel Lo vines (50-75 years old) are planted here.
